Golden age is a term used to describe periods of time in which great achievements were realized. For example, 500 to 300 B.C. is known as the golden age of ancient Greece because of the many great advances in philosophy, literature, art and government made during that time.
In my April 2016 message, I wrote about what ASSE’s board of directors has been doing this Society year. Our key initiatives have included analyzing ASSE’s core competencies, calibrating our strategic priorities, and developing a plan to advance the OSH profession and help our members succeed.
In 2014, ASSE’s House of Delegates (HOD) approved a governance restructure for the first time in 20 years. The vote culminated a process that began in 2010 with the formation of the Board Advisory Task Force that was charged with helping ASSE become more strategic and effective.

Recently, someone who is engaged in the DC political scene for safety told me that the failure of the current administration’s OSHA to issue an injury and illness prevention plan standard (or I2P2) was an historic lost opportunity for OSH professionals and ASSE members.
Latinos are the largest minority group in the U.S., and statistics show that only Mexico has a higher number of Latinos. Latinos now comprise 17% of the population, a figure expected to grow to 31% by 2060, according the U.S. Census Bureau. This increase will have significant demographic and business implications.
The story of ASSE’s growing presence in India began in late 2011, when two ASSE volunteers, Jitu Patel and Ashok Garlapati, asked Society leaders to explore how we might grow engagement in India. The country was not then viewed as a strategic market for ASSE, but this changed quickly. India is now one of the Society’s most active global groups, along with the Middle East and Nigeria.
Earlier this year, Millennials (those age 18 to 34) passed Generation X to become the largest segment of the American labor force. As more Baby Boomers retire, this trend will accelerate. In fact, Deloitte reports that Millennials will comprise a staggering 75% of the global workforce by 2025.
