Historically high temperatures are breaking records and exposing millions of people to the serious dangers of heat in the workplace

To avoid the contentious debate of what an individual human life is truly worth, government agencies use the “Value of a Statistical Life.”

On Feb. 2, 2023, the train derailment caused a 49 railcar pile-up, including 11 tank cars of hazardous chemicals. The chemicals ignited and the pile-up burned for several days. 

1 fatality, 15 injuries and complete loss of site could have been avoided, OSHA says. 

The 12-member committee advises the Secretary of Labor and Secretary of Health and Human Services on matters related to administering the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

OSHA received 195 submissions from competitors in 40 states, the District of Columbia and Guam.

It doesn’t have to be this tragic — both indoors and outdoors when temperatures reach dangerous, extreme levels. Preventive measures are found all over the internet. But heat prevention practices, in reality, are not always easily practiced, if attempted at all. 

Protecting workers from hazardous energy through Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) is a basic safety responsibility, but there are additional steps employers can take that go beyond the basic requirements.
