The costs of occupational injuries, a presidential order to make communities around chemical facilities safer and the most dangerous states for workers are among this week’s top EHS-related stories featured on ISHN:
Some states in the U.S. are far more dangerous for workers than others – but they are not necessarily the states where the most dangerous industries are based. Writing in Time Magazine, Gary Belsky describes the surprisingly wide variation in workplace injuries rates from state to state – even within the same industries.
OSHA has launched a campaign to raise awareness about the hazards likely to cause musculoskeletal disorders among health care workers responsible for patient care. These disorders include sprains, strains, soft tissue and back injuries.
Health care workers suffer more injuries and illnesses on the job each year than those in any other industry, but OSHA conducts relatively few inspections of health care facilities, according to a new report by Public Citizen.
Goal: To prevent, reduce severity of workplace injuries and illnesses
June 6, 2013
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has announced the formation of the NIOSH Center for Workers’ Compensation Studies (CWCS) that will coordinate data in an effort to reduce the burdens of work-related injuries and illness on workers, their families and communities and the economy.
Actually, we have a pretty good idea what the 8 (or ten) top global trends and issues are in EHS. The issues are addressed in several chapters in a recent book (30+ authors): “Global Occupational Health” (Oxford University Press, 2011).
Last Saturday and the Saturday before that I made no posts to my blog. It was an unfortunate result of my having been away on business. This is not an excuse mind you; I had every intention of writing and posting using the infernal timer that has vexed me every time I’ve tried using it. In hindsight I’m glad I waited. This week I’d like to talk a bit about an area of safety that I think goes largely ignored: safety while travelling.
