Worker safety advocates and environmentalists are worried that an executive order issued by the governor of Massachusetts will lead to more dangerous workplaces and higher levels of air and water pollution.
The U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB) is commending Massachusetts toughening up regulation of hazardous materials storage and processing in the state, including monitoring of high risk facilities to ensure they are complying with key federal process safety and risk management programs.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) is hailing a decision by Massachusetts to offer drivers of electric and hybrid vehicles special license plates, to easily identify them to first responders.
"Occupational nurses are the professionals
who first see and treat on-the-job injuries and illnesses," said Marthe
Kent, OSHA's regional administrator for New England.
