Written instructions for fall protection products seek to guide the proper use of the equipment and point out misuse, but they do not recognize what users unwittingly do to violate intended use. This is known as foreseeable misuse. Users and some manufacturers of fall equipment may not understand the consequences of misuse and ways that workers try to lighten their load with hidden shortcuts.
Instructions and labeling must not only be defensive and illustrative, but taught positively for worker enlightenment and workers must be trained by human factors professionals.
