The very recent passing of Chuck Noll, Hall of Fame coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, has stirred the emotions and thoughts of many. Chuck Noll is the only NFL head coach to win four Super Bowls and may be the greatest NFL head coach of all time.
Art Linkletter, the entertainer, said, “If you change your attitude you will change your life.” Wouldn’t it be nice if we always got our way with things? If things were as they SHOULD be? Unfortunately, the world usually doesn’t meet our expectations and we are left disappointed that people and things are not what they SHOULD be.
I was blown away by a report in this morning at one of the client sites I visited. It's amazing how we all keep learning, keep getting more personally safe and together set records of no one being injured. The site I was at just passed the first time in its history with six months no incidents.
Not sure this is so much an opinion piece but “just the facts” on an issue that seems to be exploding in Washington. I am talking about “mandated reports by Congress."
The medical technology advancements that have occurred in the past few decades are nothing short of astounding. Many surgeries and treatments that used to require extensive hospital stays are now performed in a doctor’s office, and the patient is back at home within hours. A few of the amazing medical applications include: scar removal through plastic surgery, titanium bone replacements, tape replacing sutures, and stents taking the place of vein removal and relocation.
I love all the great ideas I pick up from my clients. I mentioned a few weeks ago before every meeting including conference calls, one of my international consulting clients begins with a safety moment. For today’s call, I offered to give the safety moment before we began.
There are safety stories everywhere you go. This week, I was buying gas and ran into the store to get a soft drink. As I did, I heard a guy ask the cashier if it was still wet near a "slippery when wet" sign. The cashier answered, "No, it dried up."

The vast majority of employers DO do the “right thing” and OSHA and our workforce would best served if they focused on the bad apples (especially those hiring illegal aliens who do not know anything about safety).
Recently, a manager in one of our service organizations asked some questions about recurring injury trends. The trends revealed a higher incident rate among newer employees and also an injury pattern around time of day. The manager understood how newer employees can have a higher injury frequency rate; however, he was intrigued by the other data.
Employers today take all sorts of precautions to help keep their staff from harm. From thorough training to the use of the latest personal protective equipment, everybody is looking to do all they can to keep people safe in the workplace. The number of things which have an impact on the level of risk we face each day at work is vast.
