A deep and genuine mistrust of the press
As point-man for "One of America's Safest Companies" I can tell you why EHS pros are reluctant to talk to the press about their success. Having been on the receiving end of those "No good deed goes unpunished" questions more than once, I have a deep and genuine mistrust of the general press.
The trade/journal press is another matter. By their nature, they have an appreciation, even an understanding, of what each of us in the trenches deals with and understand the financial commitment that industry leaders in safety put forth every day.
We gladly talk about our programs at meetings and conferences of other members of "the faithful." But let's face it, "bad news sells" in the print media and "if it bleeds-it leads" is the mantra of the TV news!
Why stick your head out of the hole if you know someone is simply going to try and take it off??!!
