First, the teacher made it a part of the job as a communicator to know and understand the audience. We, as safety leaders need to do the same.

This week on a call with one of my clients, I took the responsibility for the pre-call safety moment. As I have mentioned previously, this was an idea I learned from this client last year. They, as many other companies, display safety as a value by beginning every meeting with a safety moment when someone shares a safety story or idea.

Lately, I have noticed a similar phenomenon to the laws regarding hands-free cellular phone use and texting while driving.
I was going online to publish this week's newsletter when I saw the coolest notice. "Due to dangerous weather conditions, our offices are closed today and we will have limited technical support available. Thank you for understanding."
As people were gathering for the meeting, Ami, the safety professional who had brought me to their site, thanked one of the employees for being at the evening session. The employee replied, “Management ‘strongly recommended’ we attend.” By the tone of his voice, he made it clear his leadership was doing all but making attendance at the meeting mandatory.
In last week's blog, I told a story of an employee directing traffic at a fast-food restaurant opening. Thinking about that incident made me think about the thoughts of the managers at the local store and even at the corporate office if he had been hit and injured while in the path of one of the hundreds of cars arriving at the restaurant.
Driving south from Indianapolis through a beautiful portion of Indiana, I see a Chick-Fil-A off the highway ahead. I turn off the main road and see a young employee standing in the middle of the street directing traffic (coincidentally, it was a new store opening).
