On Feb. 2, 2023, the train derailment caused a 49 railcar pile-up, including 11 tank cars of hazardous chemicals. The chemicals ignited and the pile-up burned for several days.

The 12-member committee advises the Secretary of Labor and Secretary of Health and Human Services on matters related to administering the Occupational Safety and Health Act.

OSHA ordered the Maersk Line to reinstate the seaman and pay $457,759 in back wages, interest, compensatory damages and $250,000 in punitive damages. 

The study found that significant work needs to be done to improve incident prevention, with 90% of respondents reporting their organizations have experienced H&S incidents in the last 12 months and 85% reporting repeat injuries on job sites.

The current standard does not state clearly that PPE must fit each affected employee properly, which OSHA's general industry and maritime standards do. 

OSHA will publish some of the data collected on its website to allow employers, employees, potential employees, employee representatives, current and potential customers, researchers and the general public to use information about a company’s workplace safety and health record to make informed decisions.
