The National Safety Council is introducing a new scholarship program for women pursuing safety as a career, with nominations opening on November 1. The Council also will accept nominations for its second year of the Student Member Congress & Expo Program. This program provides selected student members interested in safety the opportunity to attend the annual NSC Congress & Expo at no cost.
One of the “hot topics” highlighted at NSC this year is multigenerational workforces. A panel discussion Monday discussed the fact that many employers are seeing three different generations working together (potentially baby boomers, Generation X and Millennials).
During an event Monday morning, Deborah A.P Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council, and Charles A Czeisler, PhD, FRCP, director of the Sleep Matters Initiative at Brigham Health, explained the NSC’s new Fatigue Cost Calculator for Employers — an online tool that provides companies with a snapshot of not only their losses, but also their return on investment if they implement employee sleep health education programs that screen for untreated sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia.
On Monday morning, the National Safety Council honored five individuals with Distinguished Service to Safety Awards, the highest award the Council presents to safety professionals. This year’s five recipients were honored at the opening session of the NSC Congress & Expo in Indianapolis.
Attendees at the NSC Congress & Expo Monday morning listened to NASCAR driver Kyle Petty discuss safety in driving as well as his personal life.
Petty spoke about deaths in the sport, as well as the death of his son, Adam, and said “NASCAR and the entire industry said we have to proactive; we have to hang up our game.
The National Safety Council recently released a new report, “Making the Case for
Contractor Management: Examining the Safety Benefits of 3rd-Party Management.”
A few of the standout sessions and events over the next few days include Monday’s Executive Forum, which will discuss serious injury and fatality preventions.
For the first time, NSC is hosting an Auto Safety Tech Zone on the Expo floor with Ford, Toyota, FCA US and General Motors. All four car manufacturers will display vehicles equipped with cutting edge safety technologies that are paving the way toward advanced driver systems.
The National Safety Council is hosting its annual NSC Congress & Expo in Indianapolis September 23-27. This year’s event, Racing to Zero – Safety that Works, features more than 1,100 exhibitors, more than 125 educational seminars and five keynote sessions, giving attendees access to unparalleled resources to improve safety.
