Union safety activist to retire

Bill Borwegan spearheaded needlestick prevention, other laws

May 29, 2013

Bill BorweganBill Borwegan, Director of Safety and Health for the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) for the last 30 years, has announced his retirement.

Over the course of his tenure, Bill recounts he is particularly proud of the involvement of SEIU member activists who worked to "enact dozens of federal and state laws and regulations covering such issues as asbestos in schools, safe patient handling, workplace violence prevention, and bloodborne pathogens including needlestick prevention.

The planeload of workers who used to die each year from "the healthcare workers disease" (hepatitis B) is a distant memory, and the 1M accidental needlesticks that can transmit HIV and hepatitis C have been sliced by half."
