Workplace fatalities decline

In 2000, 5,915 fatal work injuries were reported - about 16 every day - the fewest since the fatality census began in 1992, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

One trouble spot: Workplace deaths among Hispanic workers increased from 725 to 815, a 12 percent increase. Fatalities among Hispanic construction workers increased 24 percent. For all other groups, the numbers of fatalities were down. Overall, job-related deaths among Hispanics have increased by 60 percent since 1992.
