That’s why ASSE brought together dozens of industry leaders and safety experts recently for a research workshop aimed at creating a new wave of progress.

IHHeroes.org website and the inaugural edition of its IH Heroes comic have both won Gold Awards in the category of Digital Media/Website Nonprofit and Print Media/Publications Book by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals (AMCP) MarCom Awards.

The American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) has won a 2017 Learnie Award for its AIHce:REPLAY series. The Learnie Awards recognize associations who have pioneered a new way of learning. The National Safety Council gives its annual Marion Martin Award to Alexi Carli, CSP, vice president of Global Health and Safety at UPS. The Marion Martin Award is presented annually to an outstanding female safety professional. Carli was honored during Opening Session on Monday at the annual NSC Congress & Expo.
The National Safety Council is introducing a new scholarship program for women pursuing safety as a career, with nominations opening on November 1. The Council also will accept nominations for its second year of the Student Member Congress & Expo Program. This program provides selected student members interested in safety the opportunity to attend the annual NSC Congress & Expo at no cost.
One of the “hot topics” highlighted at NSC this year is multigenerational workforces. A panel discussion Monday discussed the fact that many employers are seeing three different generations working together (potentially baby boomers, Generation X and Millennials).
During an event Monday morning, Deborah A.P Hersman, president and CEO of the National Safety Council, and Charles A Czeisler, PhD, FRCP, director of the Sleep Matters Initiative at Brigham Health, explained the NSC’s new Fatigue Cost Calculator for Employers — an online tool that provides companies with a snapshot of not only their losses, but also their return on investment if they implement employee sleep health education programs that screen for untreated sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia.
