Although hardhats are a fixture in construction work and are intended to keep construction workers safe, they do not always prevent accidents that lead to traumatic brain injury (TBI) on construction sites, according to the Brain Injury Society.

Two employees in two different incidents each lost a finger last year at a Georgia manufacturing company – injuries that OSHA says could have been avoided. The amputations occurred within a three month period at Elite Storage Solutions LLC. The company was issued 24 safety and health violations with proposed total penalties of $125,165.

A 32-year-old machinist suffered serious injuries to his left arm caused when his hand was caught and he was pulled into a machine on which his employer had bypassed safety devices designed to prevent such injuries. The worker has endured several surgeries and rehabilitation to repair his broken bones.

An electric technician at the Republic Steel Corp. steel manufacturing plant in Blasdell, NY, was removing wiring from a fan motor in an overhead crane on October 16, 2014, when an ungrounded electrical conductor touched a grounded surface causing an arc flash. The electric technician sustained third-degree burns on her hand and first-degree burns on her face.

As a safety team member, leader or manager you should understand the basic principle, vision and values of why your company was created.  It either provides a needed product to a consumer base or valuable service to an industry or community.

When most people think about going into work every day, they probably assume a few things. One of those things is that they won’t be physically assaulted while doing their job. That they will go home at the end of the day without being injured or killed.
