Asthma, back pain, and congestive heart failure are among the conditions showing reductions in health care costs in one large employer's disease management (DM) program, reports a study in the February Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, official publication of the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).

The National Center for Healthy Housing (NCHH) and the American Public Health Association (APHA) have released a new National Healthy Housing Standard targeting the nation’s 100 million existing homes – single family, multifamily, rental and owner occupied.
May is Asthma Awareness Month, and EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy is taking the opportunity to spread the word about how environmental asthma triggers affect sufferers of the disease. “One in ten kids in America today suffers from asthma, whichdisproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income families,” said U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy.

This includes avoiding the many building materials introducing asthma-causing chemicals into indoor environment. The materials include flooring, carpets, insulation and paints with chemicals that can cause the development of asthma.
With May being designated Asthma Awareness Month, the EPA is using the occasion to help individuals control their symptoms and to shine the spotlight on several asthma management programs that have proven effective.
