Falls are serious at any age, but especially for older people who are more likely to break a bone when they fall because of osteoporosis, which weakens the bones. Someone may not even know they have osteoporosis until a fall causes a bone to break.

National Safety Month – established by the National Safety Council (NSC) – is aimed at preventing injuries and accidental deaths by raising awareness about the leading safety and health risks, like:

Standing on rooftops and rebar are facts of life in the construction industry, but fatal falls from these heights do not have to be. In the United States each year, 10,000 construction workers are seriously injured from falls at the worksite (1). In 2015 alone, 350 construction workers perished due to falls, accounting for nearly 40% of all construction sector fatalities (2).

Falls from height continue to be the leading cause of death for construction employees, accounting for 364 fatalities recorded in 2015, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). OSHA has new resources that employers can use in their discussions with employees during the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, which runs today through May 12. Two videos have been posted on the Stand-Down homepage and a series of infographics can be downloaded from OSHA's Fall Prevention Campaign webpage.

OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction takes place next week, May 8-12. It’s a voluntary event during which employers are asked to take a break – or “stand down” – and have a conversations with their workers about fall hazards and fall prevention. It can also be an opportunity for employees to talk to management about fall hazards they see on the job.

The fourth annual National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction, which will be held May 8-12, will include a free webinar and a Facebook chat.

Previous research has shown that fatality rates for oil and gas extraction workers were decreasing for all causes of death except for those associated with falls. (1) A new study from National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, examined risk factors for fatal fall events in this industry during 2005-2014 using data from case investigations conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

A 59-year-old construction worker died earlier this month after falling 18 feet from site at New York City’s Times Square. The victim was identified in news reports as Jose Cruz. The accident occurred when Cruz fell from an I-beam near the second floor of the building while helping to remove part of a steel deck from a slab.

The Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC)-Pelican Chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and The Associated General Contractors-Rio Grande Valley Chapter in Corpus, Christi Texas have signed agreements with OSHA under its Alliance Program to help reduce hazards at their worksites.
