OSHA released a grant announcement last week for its Susan Harwood Worker Training Grants. No, the Trump administration did not wake up and suddenly realize how important job safety and health training is to high risk and vulnerable workers. These grants are funded by FY 2017 money which has already been appropriated and must be spent.
In today’s industry, computer use and use of digital devices is not limited to the office worker, but occurs in every shop floor, laboratory and other production facility. Manufacturing and industrial operations have computers or other digital screens in many aspects of their operations.
Tuesday’s product demos and presentations in the Learning Pavilions again focused on everything from sensor technology to ergonomics, and a few discussed OSHA’s new silica rule. Some of the topics up for discussion Tuesday afternoon included: • Key ergonomic principles for use in increasing productive output, decreasing waste and reducing the risk factors and costs associated with musculoskeletal disorders.
Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affect the muscles, nerves, blood vessels, ligaments and tendons. Workers in many different industries and occupations can be exposed to risk factors at work, such as lifting heavy items, bending, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling heavy loads, working in awkward body postures and performing the same or similar tasks repetitively.
Addressing safety and health issues in the workplace saves employers money and adds value to their businesses. According to the National Safety Council's Injury Facts 2017 Edition, estimates place the total costs associated with work-related deaths and injuries at $142.5 billion in 2015.
