An explosion and fire last Saturday at an industrial facility in Sarnia, Ont. claimed the life of one worker and injured five others, one of them critically. Three workers reportedly suffered serious burns.
News sources say the incident began when a dust collection system in the paint shop at Veolia ES Canada Industrial Services exploded, tearing a hole in the building’s exterior wall and sparking a fire that caused additional damage to the facility, including a partial collapse of the roof.
Eight employees were inside the building at the time of the blast.
Veolia is an industrial cleaning and maintenance services company that works in tank services. The facility is in an industrial area. Authorities say there were no chemicals released during the explosion and that nearby companies were not affected.
The Ontario Fire Marshal, Sarnia police and Ministry of Labour are said to be involved in the investigation into the cause of the explosion.
