Wiley X® sponsored NASCAR driver Joey Logano took another very important step in what has been a stellar 2014 season, winning Race 2 of the Chase for the Sprint Cup at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 21. The victory moves Logano to the next round of what is effectively NASCAR’s "playoffs," and makes the young 24-year-old driver a very serious contender for his first NASCAR championship.
"All of us at Wiley X are very excited for Joey," said Wiley X Co-Founder Myles Freeman, Jr. "We’ve watched his accomplishments this season, and he just seems to be a driver on a mission. Our company takes pride in each member of our NASCAR team, as well as our role in helping them achieve victory. We’ll be cheering for Joey - and our several other Wiley X-sponsored drivers still in Cup contention - as they move onto the next exciting elimination round," added Freeman.
The victory - Logano’s second at New Hampshire - didn’t come easily. Logano held the lead for 73 laps, but along the way he had to survive a season-high 15 cautions. These interruptions make it hard for drivers to build and maintain momentum. Still, with 27 laps to go, Logano took the lead from Kevin Harvick® (also a Team Wiley X driver) and held on for his fourth win of the season and his seventh career Cup victory overall.
As important as this race was to Logano’s chances of winning the Cup, it was personally rewarding, as well. Logano considers New Hampshire Motor Speedway (about 75 miles from Boston) his home track. He attended his first NASCAR race there at the tender age of five, already dreaming of cruising Victory Lane before cheering family and friends. It was at New Hampshire that Logano made his first career Cup start and eventually won his first race in 2009 - but that was a rain-shortened affair that always carried an asterisk in Logano’s mind and denied him the traditional victory celebration he dreamed about. This time was different, and Logano, now a proven winner - enjoyed his moment in the sun before throngs of cheering hometown fans on New Hampshire’s front straightaway.
