Spyglass Open Path Combustible Gas DetectorScott Safety, a global leader in innovative personal protective equipment and safety devices, recently announced the availability of the Spyglass Open Path Combustible Gas Detector, a pair of optical units, one an infrared light source, the other an IR detector, that are separated by a distance and work together to detect the presence of combustible gases in the atmosphere between the two units.

Designed for accuracy and reliability, the Scott Safety Spyglass system detects hydrocarbon gases by analyzing the absorption of radiation caused by gases in the atmosphere and comparing it to background atmospheric absorption. This is accomplished between a pair of units: a flash source and a detector that can monitor a distance of up to 200 meters.

For line of sight applications such as fence line and pipeline monitoring, the use of Spyglass Open Path Detectors can replace the use of up to 20 Fixed Point Detectors. Coupled with minimal maintenance requirements, including periodical cleaning of the unit’s lenses and an alignment check, and only one consumable sensor to replace with a 10 year life, Scott Safety's Spyglass provides reduced lifetime maintenance costs for users.

“Spyglass offers our customers a low total cost of ownership solution, with extreme reliability in all operating conditions, and high accuracy in alarm triggering due to its advanced design,” said Chip Leiner, Global Product Line Manager of Open Path Gas and Flame Detection for Scott Safety. “Its global regulatory approvals and third-party SIL certification guarantee that Spyglass can be deployed nearly anywhere in the world and meet local regulations. It’s an open approach to gas detection.”

The Spyglass Open Path Combustible Gas Detector** is available in four basic models, designed to cover different ranges: Model 20 (7-20 meters); Model 40 (15-40 meters); Model 100 (35-100 meters); and Model 200 (80-200 meters).
