In a letter written August 6, 2010 to BP’s new CEO, Robert Dudley, the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s President Michael Brandt offered congratulations and a standing offer of assistance. Here is the full text of the letter:

The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA®) would like to congratulate you on your recent promotion to group chief executive for BP. Your efforts organizing the recently established unit responsible for cleanup operations and compensation programs in the Gulf made you the ideal candidate for this important position.

As the premier association of occupational and environmental health and safety (OEHS) professionals, it is AIHA’s duty to work with leaders in the environmental health and safety field. Our 10,240 members play a significant role in worker health and safety and represent a cross-section of industry, private business, labor, government, and academia. In fact, some of our members are directly involved in the cleanup efforts in the Gulf. AIHA can be of assistance in assessing and managing the risks associated with the oil spill not only by applying the experience and expertise of our members but also using the collective knowledge of AIHA’s technical committees, databases, and scientific/technical resources to inform our members’ judgments to help anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and control environmental and occupational health hazards.

In addition, we have a consultants listing that is a directory of OEHS professionals. This list provides government agencies, consumers, business owners, and AIHA members with access to 660 consultants and 250 companies that can assist in the event an OEHS professional is needed. The list is available online (www.aiha.org) and, on request, also can be provided in a printed, bound version.

If AIHA can be of any assistance to you or BP, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely, Michael T. Brandt, DrPh, CIH, PMP AIHA President
