Russian mine disaster kills 47
Forty-seven coal miners were killed in a Siberian pit that was shattered by a gas explosion earlier this month. In the space of two hours the level of methane climbed to nine times the norm, according to government officials.
Russian television described the mine as a modern facility in an industry flawed by lax operating procedures and old equipment.
