Swedish helmet safety company Mips has released its 2023 Sustainability Report, which includes a 20.8% reduction in emissions per solution compared to the previous year. Mips attributes this reduction to its increased use of energy-efficient production equipment, renewable energy at manufacturing sites, and optimized transportation methods. The company also incorporated post-industrial recycled plastic into certain products.
In an effort to limit its environmental impact, Mips offered its suppliers 100% post-industrial recycled plastic for its most-sold solution. The company is also prioritizing social and workplace responsibility by performing third-party audits of its largest suppliers. In 2023, Mips conducted three audits to evaluate compliance with the company’s Code of Conduct and the ten principles of the UN Global Compact.
Mips has also made strides in gender distribution within its workforce. The company reported a breakdown of 46% women to 54% men, surpassing its target and including its Chinese subsidiary. Mips says it is actively working to reverse the trend of a male-dominated helmet industry.
Mips’ sustainability efforts are rooted in its commitment to the UN Global Compact and the Science Based Target initiative, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The company also aligns its sustainability strategy with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Reporting Initiative. In 2023, Mips conducted a materiality analysis to identify 23 key areas of sustainability to prioritize moving forward. The analysis revealed that raw material usage presented the greatest opportunity for impact.
