ABUS and the three-time WNBA Champion Phoenix Mercury will team up for the “Brittney Blocks” initiative, a promotion in which ABUS will donate $50 to the Arizona Humane Society each time Mercury center Brittney Griner records a blocked shot during the 2019 WNBA season. Griner, who earned back-to-back WNBA Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2014 and 2015, has blocked 574 shots in 181 career games (including playoffs) and has led the WNBA in blocks in each of her first six seasons.
During the 2019 season, Griner and Mercury mascot Scorch will make a visit to the Arizona Humane Society to meet with staff, volunteers and AHS’ pets. Griner, Scorch, and representatives from ABUS and the Arizona Humane Society will also partake in an on-court presentation on September 8 to highlight the “Brittney Blocks” promotion and share the final donation amount.
After coming within one win of a trip to the 2018 WNBA Finals, the Phoenix Mercury return in 2019 in search of a league-record tying fourth WNBA title. Led by the All-Star trio of Diana Taurasi, Brittney Griner and DeWanna Bonner, Phoenix opens its title quest on May 25 at Seattle on ABC.
