A Florida woman has been convicted of workers’ compensation fraud after footage from a surveillance camera showed her trying to fake a workplace injury.
Sheyla White, an employee of Cinque Terre Energy Partners in Fort Lauderdale, claimed a sprinkler head from a ceiling emergency sprinkler system fell, bounced off her desk and struck her in the head in 2015, causing an injury.
News sources say an insurance company investigation initiated after Cinque Terre Energy Partners filed a compensation claim on White’s behalf, turned up surveillance footage that did show the sprinkler head landing on White’s desk. However, she was seen picking it up and looking at it for a moment before striking herself in the forehead with it.
White was sentenced to 18 months’ probation despite a previous arrest for stealing personal identification information from her students when she was a teacher. The maximum sentence for the conviction is five years.
