An investigative team from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) is en route to Cantonment, Florida, to look into an incident at the Airgas facility that killed one worker Sunday.

Airgas makes nitrous oxide using materials from the Ascend Performance Materials plant which is next door to it.

According to news sources, an explosion took placed in the facility’s loading bay and involved nitrous oxide. A preliminary investigation conducted by the State Fire Marshal’s Office said early indications are that the blast originated near a holding tank in the Airgas loading dock near two semis containing nitrous oxide.

The fatally injured worker was found 50 to 75 feet from the tanks

The CSB investigative team will be led by Investigator-in-Charge Dan Tillema. Chairperson Vanessa Sutherland said, “Our condolences to the family of the individual impacted by this tragic event. The CSB’s accident investigation will determine the root cause of this tragic incident.”
