The American Industrial Hygiene Association® (AIHA) announced that its board of directors has appointed Lawrence "Larry" D. Sloan, CAE as the new CEO, effective October 17, 2016 to lead the largest national association dedicated to protecting worker health.
Sloan, currently President/CEO of the Society of Chemical Manufacturers and Affiliates (SOCMA), the leading trade association serving the specialty chemical sector, is a seasoned association professional known for his track record in passing national legislation and regulations, building coalitions with other trade groups, and introducing state-of-the-art products, services, and tools to benefit SOCMA members.
"Larry is exceptionally well-prepared to lead AIHA - his past experience already connects him to the industrial hygiene profession, yet he will bring new perspectives on how AIHA is situated in the world," stated President of the AIHA Board of Directors, Steven E. Lacey, PhD, CIH, CSP.
Prior to joining SOCMA, Sloan served as President of the Adhesive and Sealant Council. He began his career as a chemical engineer at Air Products and later worked for Nalco Chemical Company in marketing, manufacturing and sales capacities.
"The opportunities that lie ahead for AIHA are enormous. I am focused on raising global public awareness about the compelling business case for and impact that industrial hygiene professionals have on society. Concurrently, I look forward to forging new coalitions with like-minded organizations to promote worker health and protection, and diversifying AIHA's educational tools and delivery channels to accommodate its changing membership," said Larry Sloan. "I am confident in the expertise of the AIHA staff and am humbled and deeply honored to lead this great organization."
"It was clear that Larry's unique combination of an engineering background, private industry business experience, and proven success as an association CEO at SOCMA made him the ideal candidate to lead AIHA," asserted Dan Anna, PhD, CIH, CSP, Immediate Past-President of the AIHA Board of Directors and Chair of the Executive Search Committee. "Because of his prior involvement with EHS-related issues, Larry joins AIHA with a demonstrated interest in our mission to protect worker health."
Sloan earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University. He holds a Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation through the American Society of Association Executives.
Nancy Green, CAE, who was appointed AIHA's Interim Executive Director upon the resignation of AIHA's Executive Director of 7 years, Peter O'Neil, in February 2016, will serve as Deputy Executive Director upon Larry Sloan's arrival.
