Vision requirements for FAA medical certification:
DISTANT VISION:
First-Class Airline Transport Pilot: 20/20 or better in each eye separately, with or without correction.
Second-Class Commercial Pilot: 20/20 or better in each eye separately, with or without correction.
Third-Class Private Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately, with or without correction.
NEAR VISION:
First-Class Airline Transport Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction, as measured at 16 inches.
Second-Class Commercial Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction, as measured at 16 inches.
Third-Class Private Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction, as measured at 16 inches.
INTERMEDIATE VISION:
First-Class Airline Transport Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction at age 50 and over, as measured at 32 inches.
Second-Class Commercial Pilot: 20/40 or better in each eye separately (Snellen equivalent), with or without correction at age 50 and over, as measured at 32 inches.
Third-Class Private Pilot: No requirement.
COLOR VISION:
First-Class Airline Transport Pilot: Ability to perceive those colors necessary for safe performance of airmen duties.
Second-Class Commercial Pilot: Ability to perceive those colors necessary for safe performance of airmen duties.
Third-Class Private Pilot: Ability to perceive those colors necessary for safe performance of airmen duties.
